Bandwidth
Bandwidth is a quota of data that you can transfer via uploading and downloading through your internet connection.

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) specifies this amount and it is usually a month quota.
Bandwidth is measured in bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes and your ISP’s monthly quota is usually measured in megabytes and gigabytes.

How much bandwidth you require each month depends on what you use the internet for. For example the average web page is 50kb (kilobytes) and the average mp3 music file is 4mb (megabytes) so viewing approx 80 web pages would require the same amount of bandwidth required for downloading an average mp3 file.

If you surf the net quite regular using your laptops and sometimes download files etc then an unlimited bandwidth package from your ISP would be recommended.

BIOS
Basic Input Output System
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) in Laptops uses this system to communicate with all its installed hardware devices. Special software instructions are contained within the BIOS that enable the CPU to both control and communicate with its devices.

A Laptops main BIOS system is usually stored in a microchip on its Motherboard and is usually the very first piece of software that is run when the computer is booted up (turned on).

Bit
Binary Digit
A bit is a binary digit which either has the value of 0 or 1 and represents information processed or stored within a digital system. If a Laptops processor is a 128bit then it can process 128 bits (16 Bytes) of data per every clock cycle.

BYTE
A BYTE is a unit of measurement describing the transfer rate and storage capacity of a digital system. A BYTE is 8 BITS, a Kilobyte is made up of 8 Bytes, A Megabyte is made up of 8 Kilobytes and so on.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth wireless technology
Bluetooth is a wireless technology that enables devices to transfer data wirelessly, easily and at fast speeds. The most common devices using this technology are Laptops, Mobile phones and PDA’s.

Bluetooth is perhaps better know for it’s wireless earpieces that enable users to use their mobile phone’s hands free which comes in very useful if you are driving for example (although with a lot of users it seems to be permanently attached to their ears!!).

As this technology is advancing rapidly it can be found in many new products such as gaming machines (the nintendo DS for example), printers, GPS systems and now even medical products. Many Laptops now come with the very latest version of Bluetooth built in.

BASIC
Beginners All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code
BASIC is a computer programming language used to make many different applications including business ones. In the early eighties it was the language used with the very popular early home computers such as the Sinclair ZX81 and the Sinclair Spectrum.

Users of these computers could write their programs and games and now days this programing language has evolved into many forms such as the very popular Microsoft Visual Basic which can be used with pretty much most of today’s Laptops.

Blue Ray
Blue Ray is a technology developed by Sony and is an optical disk system similar to CD’s and DVD’s.
However, due to blue ray being of a much higher density and reading on a different wavelength to CD’s and DVD’s their storage capacity is much greater which makes them perfect for High Definition movies.
This technology gets it’s name from the blue coloured laser used to read the disks and more and more Laptops are now being sold with blue ray disk drives built in.

Browser
A browser is a piece of software used by Laptops to view internet pages. There are many different web browsers available and some will render web pages slightly different from others.
The most common web browsers used by Laptops and PC’s are Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox and Opera.

BLOG
Web Log
A blog is a web page found on the internet that belongs to and is updated by an individual or a group of individuals. They are most commonly online diaries or journals containing topics in the interest of its author who is also know as it’s blogger.

Most bloggers use their Laptops to update their blog regularly and visitors can usually add their comments to a bloggers site adding interactivity between it’s visitors.
