Cache
Pronounced ‘Cash’ there are two forms of Cache, memory cache and disk cache.

Disk cache is a space on a Laptops hard disk drive that is reserved for data that the computer may think it will use again.
For example when surfing the internet your Laptop will store any web pages that you visit in its Cache so that if you then revisit that web page it simply loads it straight in from it’s cache rather than downloading the whole page again (unless the page has been updated) making the web page load / display a lot quicker and also means that you are not using as much bandwidth.

Cookie
Cookies are small text files that are stored on Laptops by web pages These have many different uses for example when you shop with an online store it will use cookies so that the shopping cart system remembers what you have in your cart. Another use is a tracking cookie which are used on affiliation websites. These sites may advertise another companies products using banners and links and when a visitor clicks one of these it will place a tracking cookie on their Laptop so that the company knows which site the visitor has come from to ensure they receive any commision should the visitor make a purchase.

CPU
Central Processing Unit
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the processor in Laptops (i.e. intel pentium 4, AMD Athlon, Core 2 Duo) which is basically the computers brain.

Card Reader
A card reader is a device found built in to many of today’s Laptops and can read many formats of storage cards such a flash, memory stick, MD, MS etc that are found with many devices such as digital cameras, MP3 players. This saves the user connecting both pieces of hardware together with cables.

ColdFusion
ColdFusion is an application server and framework of development software used for developing computer software and more commonly dynamic webpages.

CGI
Common Gateway Interface
Not to be confused with ‘Computer generated image(s)’ (i.e. special computer effects in movies) CGI or Common Gateway Interface is a technology that allows a webpage to communicate and transfer data with a program. This scenario is usually found on web servers for example a contact form on a website. The user will enter their details /questions on a normal webpage(html) and the data will then be sent to the CGI program to be processed.

Cron Job
A Cron job is an event that happens at a specified time on a web server automatically. For example an online retail store, when the time of day reaches midnight a 20% sale will begin with that store and the web server will automatically reduce the prices of the items stored in its shopping cart system by 20% without any intervention from the site owner (apart from originally configuring the cronjob).

CD
Compact Disk
A CD or Compact disk is a media storage format most commonly used to store music for playing in a CD player. You can also store data and files on a compact disk such as documents or photo’s. Whilst many Laptops came with CD readers / writers already fitted they now come with DVD readers / writers which are also capable of reading CD’s.

Core 2 Duo
A Core 2 Duo is a micro processing chip developed by intel. This is the engine room or brain of a Laptop and is the next model on from the dual core processors.

What it basically means is that the processing chip has two cores so in theory it can work twice as fast but this is not always the case.
Because the processing calculations are split between 2 core’s, the processors clock speed can be reduced reducing heat and power consumption which makes them perfect for Laptops where low power consumption is a must.
