Laptop Jargon Buster - Letter M

 

Mb
Megabyte
A megabyte is a unit of measurement given to storage devices such as the hard disk drives found in most Laptops.
1 Megabyte is equal to 1024 Kilobytes.



Mhz
Megahertz
Megahertz is a measurement of frequency and usually refers to a Laptops processors speed.
For example, a processor running at 250Mhz can process 250 million cycles every second.
A Gigahertz is 1000 Megahertz so a 2.4Ghz processor can process 2400 million cycles every second.



Modem
Modulator Demodulator
A modem is a communications device used to connect Laptops to a network such as the internet.



Motherboard
A motherboard is also known as a mainboard and this is the main circuit board inside all computers.
All the components inside the computer connect to the motherboard such as the processor, ram, graphics card, sound card, USB ports etc (sometimes not always directly).
Some motherboards now found in modern Laptops have many components integrated into them such as the graphics and sound cards.
Please note that not all components fit all motherboards.



MS DOS
MicroSoft Disk Operating System
This is a software system developed by microsoft that enables windows based computers to have access to and be able to maintain storage devices such as the hard drive, DVD Re-Writer etc.



MP3
An MP3 is a compressed audio file used with Laptops, MP3 players, mobile phones etc.
Because the audio file is compressed without loosing too much sound quality this makes the file sizes a lot smaller and ideal for small storage devices such as the player and phones.



MP4
Moving Picture Expert Group-4
MP4 or MPEG-4 is a compressed audio and video file very similar to MP3 apart from just being used to store music is also stores video.
Again this file format has a fantastic compression rate which makes them ideal format for streaming video files and downloads from the internet.



MY SQL
MY SQL is a multi user database system found on many web servers across the internet.


MIDI
Musical Instrument Digital Interface
MIDI is an interface system allowing musical instruments such as electronic keyboards, guitars to be controlled and interacted with via your Laptop.
A lot of new sound cards found in many of today’s computers have a MIDI system built in to it.



MIME
Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions
Mime is a system used by computers for the encoding of binary data when transferring via email or across the internet.



Mouse
A mouse is a cursor pointing peripheral / device used to interact with your Laptops.
